Been there. After five layoffs between 2015 and 2022, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 setback felt personal, and it was easy to feel invisible in the process.

Here’s what I’ve learned: sending out tons of resumes doesn’t guarantee results. What 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 matters is 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

To go from invisible to indispensable:

✅ 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸. Don’t just collect names. Connect with intention, ask for introductions, and nurture those relationships. 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘣𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥.

✅ 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. Skip the cookie-cutter approach. Do your homework, mention 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 people or projects, and clearly 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦.

✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Share your thoughts and experiences regularly. Small, authentic touches over time 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘥.

I won’t sugarcoat it, this takes work. But it puts 𝘺𝘰𝘶 in the driver’s seat, rather than waiting on algorithms or cold emails.

𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 bring skills, stories, and value that deserve to be heard.

𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

✨ 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻...

When I launched my consulting business after several layoffs (5𝘹 𝘪𝘯 7 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴!), waiting for 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 to be perfect would have kept me stuck.

Instead, trusting my gut and embracing “𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩” is what got me moving forward.

That leap - 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘆, 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹, is what started the most aligned chapter of my career.

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆.

I’ve seen plenty of founders hesitate because “𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵” feels like 𝘵𝘰𝘰 big a risk.
